Southwest Tornadoes Leave Communities to Pick Up the Pieces

Amidst a decline in federal funding, Southwest Michigan faces a monumental impact after a multi-tornado storm touched down in Cass, Branch, and St. Joseph counties early March, 2026.

After the Storm is stepping in to help survivors navigate their long-term recovery; however, FEMA funding is currently awaiting presidential approval. Because this disaster has not yet been declared, Governor Gretchen Whitmer has requested activation of the Individual Assistance program for the three counties.

Community efforts with the Southwest Michigan Care Fund raised over $70,000 in three weeks to support homes and businesses affected by the storms.

“When we turned on the Southwest Michigan Cares Fund, we knew our community would show up,” said Anna Murphy, President and CEO of United Way of Southwest Michigan. “$70,000 in donations is real, meaningful help for these organizations on the ground helping people in their own communities to recover. We are grateful to every single person and organization that has given.”

While we await the state’s official assessment, it is clear that there is much work to be done. We are dedicated to supporting our neighbors and creating paths forward for those affected. We actively hiring for Case Managers and Construction Analysts for these areas.
